2019, Heavy Year for a Number of Smartphone Brands

This year will be an important time for many smart phone manufacturers. The smart phone market share has changed a lot in recent years.

Globally, Samsung is still topping the smartphone market. Huawei is now ranked second after shifting Apple to the top three. However, they are threatened by newcomers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus.

Based on the Androidpit report, 2019 is a key year for the market share struggle with the advent of folding smartphones and 5G. However, what will happen to Sony, LG, Motorola and HTC? Can these companies survive?

Sony
When we talk about Sony, we all know that they have a reputation as a big company. This Japanese brand managed to carve its name in the world of technology thanks to television, stereo, and of course Play Station.

However, it is different when we talk about smartphones. The Xperia family was popular a few years ago, but is now fading especially in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the latest high-end models from Sony are not well received. They cannot compete with Samsung or Huawei at the same price.

In addition, his strategy for introducing flagship every six months is not the best step. Only fans of the Sony brand are buying the latest Xperia.

In fact, Sony produces excellent image sensors, including the famous IMX. In fact, some of the best cameras on the market use sensors from Japanese brands such as Pixel 3, Galaxy S9 +, Huawei P20 Pro, and iPhone. So, why does the Sony device not stand out, especially in the camera sector?

Apparently, the company plans to bring together software and hardware for the photography sector. They want to make their camera devices stand out because they are very important today, giving birth to XZ3.

Sony will launch XZ4 which is expected to support 5G and is likely to be presented at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 2019.

Sony is also expected to expand the middle class series with Xperia XA3 and L3. In addition, Sony will compete to present the first folding smartphone revealed in a recent patent.

LG
The Korean giant, LG, did not succeed well in its mobile division, at least in terms of the number of sales. Since 2016, they have suffered losses from quarter to quarter.

The dynamics are the same in 2018. Nonetheless, LG has been a big success in the television division. Apart from losses in the smartphone sector, companies are still profitable in other sectors.
LG really hopes that the newest top-class device, the first V40 ThinQ with five integrated cameras, will be released in October 2019. The company targets its sales figures to exceed LG G7.

With all these developments, LG has ambitious plans for 2019, including the introduction of folding smartphones. Samsung and Huawei seem to be competing to find a position to be the first to release this kind of device.

However, what if LG was the first to complete the challenge? Rumor has it that the LG folding device will be ready at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2019.
In the future, we will also see the G8 and V50 in 2019. Will this device be integrated with 5G? Let's just wait.

Motorola

Motorola has been considered "confused" over the past few years. Had been sold to Lenovo, then became Moto and now Motorola again.

The amount of sales is not large in most markets. However, in developing countries like Brazil, Motorola is the second best-selling brand and is very strong thanks to the entry-level model. This is also quite successful in the US, partly because of the absence of Huawei and Xiaomi.

The company's strategy is to continue to operate separately in two domains. In Europe, the US and Latin America, their devices are called Moto. In China and India, their devices still have the Lenovo name. This is similar to the dynamics of Huawei / Honor.

His ambition is to prioritize his middle class devices rather than his flagship. Without a doubt, the biggest launch in 2019 is the Moto G7 which is expected to come in four different versions.

Nokia
In the past, who did not know the cellphone number of a million Nokia people. In 2009, when Android phones and iPhones were still new, Nokia was still dominant with a market share of 39%.
Unfortunately, this company does not know how to keep up with the times and has since fallen.
Having sold it to Microsoft and forcing it to use its own operating system is a disastrous decision.

Then, the company was bought by the Global HMD formed by former Nokia executives. With commitments directed at Android smartphones at affordable prices, the results are quite good. Now, everyone is waiting for the release of Nokia 9 in 2019 which is predicted to be there will be five rear cameras.

HTC
HTC did not have an extraordinary year in 2018. Their sales figures in November 2018 were very bad with a decline in income from more than 70% year on year.

The company earned less than 1 billion US dollars for the first time in more than a decade. This together with a large reduction in the number of company employees 25%.

In 2017, after several quarters with negative results, HTC sold part of its smartphone division to Google, including 2,000 employees. Many of them worked on developing Pixels and Pixels 2.
HTC's latest high-end smartphone is the U12 + which was introduced in May 2018. The U12 + is a device that doesn't impress the general public.

Although there are rumors that HTC will stop making smartphones, this Taiwanese brand will continue to try. So, what will be the focus of HTC in the coming year?
For now, HTC has launched Exodus 1. The first smartphone with blockchain technology, which is a device for storing your digital currency. HTC has confirmed its partnership with Sprint for the launch of the 5G device.

According to HTC Taiwan's President, the company will focus on middle and upper class devices, at least in the first half of 2019. This includes the HTC Desire 12s which was just introduced.
However, if things don't improve, HTC might focus their efforts on developing the virtual reality sector. Vive headsets are their main product, so HTC's future might be in virtual reality.
