6.8 Million Facebook Users' Personal Photo Data Leaks

Facebook confirmed that personal photos of their 6.8 million users were leaked due to a bug last weekend.

"Our internal team found an API photo bug that might have an impact on people who use Facebook Login and give permission to the third application to access their photos," Facebook said through their official blog, Monday, December 17 2018.

Now, Facebook has cleared the bug. However, they are worried that some third applications might have access to more photos in the September 13-25 period.

"At this time, we believe this bug may affect up to 6.8 million users and 1,500 applications made by 876 developers. Applications that are affected by this bug are those who are allowed to access the photo API and who are given permission by users to access their photos Facebook said as reported by Antara.

Usually, the third application that is allowed to access photos can only see content shared by users on their timeline. But, this bug allows developers to see photos of users in other places, for example in the Stories or Marketplace feature.

The bug can also access user photos uploaded to Facebook, but not published. Facebook usually stores photos that have not been published for three days.

"We regret this. Next week we will issue devices for developer applications so that they can sort out which of their users might be affected by this bug. We will work with developers to delete the photos," Facebook said.

Facebook also notifies users of this bug through the Help Center feature.
It is not explained why Facebook has just announced the event that took place last September. In fact, in the same month, they also detected a security problem that infected around 50 million of their users.
